According to the Yakushi Hongan Kudoku Sutra, he practiced the Bodhisattva path in the Eastern world, made twelve great vows, and fulfilled them. This deity has been worshipped since ancient times to save all sentient beings from the disease of ignorance, to bring them happiness and well-being, to complete their senses, and to lead them to liberation. In the Vajradhatu and Garbhadhatu mandalas, this deity is considered to be the same as Akshobhya Buddha of the Vajradhatu and Mahavairocana Buddha of the Garbhadhatu. The figure is often depicted with a medicine jar in the left hand and the Abhaya Mudra (gesture of fearlessness) in the right hand, but this is not consistent. With Nikko and Gekko Bodhisattvas as attendants, the Yakushi Triad is enshrined, and the Twelve Divine Generals, who are guardian deities, are worshipped as their retinue.
