The optical system optimized for APS-C image sensors maintains high image quality while keeping the lens length compact, offering a 5x high-magnification zoom (equivalent to 27-136mm in 135 format) and high image quality. It features the first dual-aspherical lens in an EF lens. This effectively corrects various aberrations and ensures high image quality across the zoom range. The new IS unit and optimal control provide approximately 3 stops of shake correction in shutter speed terms.

It offers a versatile focal length of approximately 27-136mm in 35mm equivalent, but the maximum aperture is somewhat dark at F4-5.6. Designed for APS-C size sensors, it has an image circle suitable for such sensors but can only be mounted on the '20D' and 'EOS Kiss Digital'.
