A Reikyozen is a set of food and drink offerings used in Buddhist sects other than Shinshu Buddhism.

It expresses gratitude to Buddha and remembrance of ancestors, and is offered on occasions such as the seventh day, forty-ninth day, hundredth day, anniversary of death, monthly anniversary, memorial services, and the equinox.

Obon is also a time when the souls of the deceased return to this world, so a meal is offered to honor the deceased.

*Note that in Shinshu Buddhism, it is believed that the deceased become Buddhas after death, so Reikyozen are not used.
