Ukiyo-e: The Last Gleam
"Shin-hanga," a style of print created in the late Meiji period with the aim of reviving ukiyo-e in a new form, stands out for its beautiful colors and lyrical expression. In recent years, it has become extremely popular in Japan. While carrying on the style of Kobayashi Kiyochika, the "last ukiyo-e artist" who captured the disappearing Edo period on his canvases, leading Shin-hanga artists such as Kawase Hasui and Yoshida Hiroshi captured new scenes of Japan.
This book features the Müller Collection at the Smithsonian National Art Museum of Asian Art, along with valuable historical materials such as photographs from the time. It traces the last brilliance of ukiyo-e and the trajectory of its inheritance, as captured by the eyes of artists who combined tradition and innovation.

*This book uses a codex binding method, where the spine is not covered by the cover, and the threads used to bind the book are intentionally left visible. Because it opens completely flat at 180 degrees, the illustrations displayed across spreads do not get caught in the spine, and it also has the feel of a traditional Japanese bound book. The spine is reinforced with glue after being bound with thread, so there are no issues with its strength.
