Shigaraki ware is pottery crafted in Shigaraki Town, a mountain village in Koka City, Shiga Prefecture. It is one of Japan's Six Ancient Kilns and has a history spanning over 1,200 years. Designated a traditional craft by the national government in 1976 (Showa 51), it features a variety of shapes and expressions born from nature and artisans, and is imbued with the sincerity and playfulness of masters who value "imbalance." The "Hechimon" (registered trademark) comes from a Shigaraki artisan's word meaning "unusual objects." Spend the Japanese summer feeling the natural breeze...
