The firefly squid (Watasenia scintillans) belongs to the family Pseudococcidae, suborder Ophthalmidae, order Pseudococcidae. Males measure 40-50 mm in body length, while females measure 55-70 mm. They are named for the firefly-like glow they produce. Their glow is thought to come from three distinct organs: the "dermal photophores" scattered throughout the body, funnel, head, and some of the arms; the "arm photophores" at the end of the fourth arm; and the "ocular photophores" around the eyes. Each organ is thought to play a different role. From early spring to early summer, numerous female firefly squids spawn near the shore of Toyama Bay. This area has been designated a Special Natural Monument by the national government as the "Hot Spring Sea Surface." During the spring peak season, many tourists visit Toyama Prefecture to enjoy their beautiful glowing appearance and delicious cuisine. This product uses a phosphorescent fabric that stores light.
