Amazon Review
It was only natural that Nirvana's co-founders, Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl, would plan this compilation of Kurt Cobain's second posthumous album. The heaviness and tension of Cobain's first posthumous album, "MTV Unplugged in New York," became so strongly associated with the band's live performances, thanks to repeated broadcasts on MTV in the days following his suicide. However, the essence of Nirvana's live performances was not so much an acoustic feel or a death wish, but rather a yearning for life, expressed with all its energy.
This album features 16 tracks spanning the band's entire live recordings, each incredibly loud, frenetic, and at times unimaginably messy. Cobain's joyous screams on the opening track, "Intro," a pre-concert snippet, contrast sharply with the anguished cries of "Where Did You Sleep Last Night." The band then launches into "School," which ends with a rousing chorus urging, "Don't be sad." However, the sentimentality is short-lived, drowned out by the thunderous, dynamic numbers "Smells Like Teen Spirit," "Sliver," "Heart-Shaped Box," and "Negative Creep."
While this album is certainly worthy of applause, it lacks any unreleased gems and isn't a standout among the late band's albums. As such, it's not as significant as their previous studio albums, even the pessimistic yet revelatory "Unplugged." (Jim Derogatis, Amazon.com)
