[Summary]
Utagawa Hiroshige rose to fame as a hugely popular ukiyo-e artist with his "Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō" series published by Hoeido. Twenty years later, he released a spectacular series of famous places along the five provinces and seven roads. This series is "Illustrated Guide to Famous Places in the Sixty-odd Provinces." With a total of 69 prints, this is the second-largest series in Hiroshige's career, after "One Hundred Famous Views of Edo."
The composition is vertical, just like "One Hundred Famous Views of Edo." Close-up magnifications are also used. However, what is noteworthy are the stunning panoramic views and meticulous detail. The diverse depictions of water rival those of Hokusai's "Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji," and the realism and impact of the spatial expanse are unmatched. While this series tends to be overshadowed by the two aforementioned masterpieces, its quality is undeniably comparable.
