This goshuin (stamp book) uses crepe fabric.
It's made with two layers of Echizen washi paper, a tradition dating back approximately 1,500 years, and is accordion-folded.
The accordion-fold design allows for a flat writing surface for easy writing, and the history of your visit is clear at a glance.
The two-layered washi paper prevents bleed-through and allows you to write on the back as well.
Goshuin stamps were originally given when submitting sutras to shrines and temples, but now they can be received as proof of visitation.
Unlike commemorative stamps or prints, goshuin stamps are written just for you, making them a great memento and record of your visit.
Chirimen (crepe) is made by weaving tightly twisted weft threads alternately with the warp threads, one on each side.
The woven fabric has a textured appearance called "shibo" (crease) due to the strong twist of the two alternating weft threads.
The texture changes and develops a unique, soft appearance when exposed to light.
This shibo gives the fabric a supple texture and makes it less likely to wrinkle.
It is said to have been introduced to Sakai, Japan in the late 16th century, and then spread to Kyoto, Shiga, and other areas, and then throughout the country.
Also known as crepe weaving, the word "crepe" is said to have originated from the French word for chirimen (crepe silk).
Hanagatami (flower basket) refers to a basket used to wrap and store flowers, and is an archaic word for "hanakago" (flower basket).
This is a gentle and cute item, like placing individual flowers in a flower basket.
