Introduction
This is Norwegian pianist Leif Ove Andsnes' second release under his exclusive Sony Classical contract, marking his second complete recording of Beethoven's piano concertos. Titled "A Journey to Beethoven," this project marks Andsnes's first recording of Beethoven's works, given his mid-40s and the height of his career. His first release, Piano Concertos Nos. 1 and 3, released in 2011, was highly praised for his mature pianism and profound musical insight. This time, he finally returns to Beethoven's No. 4, often considered the most challenging of his five works, and No. 2, which, contrary to its opus number, was written before No. 1.
Andsnes had this to say about these two pieces: "These two pieces always bring me joy, surprise, and the pleasure of discovery. While they certainly contain dramatic elements, they are filled with a childlike beauty and innocent joy that astonishes me. Dealing with them is like interacting with my three children," he said, dedicating this recording to his three children.
