[OUTDOOR PRODUCTS]
Outdoor Products is a brand founded in 1973 by the Altschul brothers in Los Angeles, USA.
The brothers' shop was originally the first department store on the West Coast to handle military surplus and camping gear, and also had the equipment to repurpose military tarps into camping tents, backpacks, and other items.
One day, they suddenly realized that while they stocked plenty of equipment useful for practical activities like skiing, canoeing, and mountain climbing, they had absolutely no products for everyday use by people involved in those activities.
At the time, there were no products on the market that they could confidently recommend for everyday use to people who know real gear.
So, using the equipment they used to repurpose military tarps, they began making "outdoor product" bags.
Because of this origin, the store's initial selection was a strange one, with backpacks, sleeping bags, gaiters, rain ponchos, and other items lined up in a seemingly random fashion.
Because they had been dealing in the finest gear with great respect for it for many years, they didn't try to develop products that would compete with those products, but instead focused on everyday use items that those brands hadn't made.
Eventually, Outdoor Products' production volume increased, as did the number of employees, but with the rise of labor unionism in the mid-1970s, labor costs per employee continued to rise.
The only solution was to simplify the process for each product, and the resulting design became the basic style of Outdoor Products' simple daypacks, which remain in use today.
While simply constructed with two parts and minimal sewing, these daypacks, made from durable Cordura fabric and YKK zippers, were sold in university co-ops across the United States by the mid-1980s, along with similarly simple Boston bags.
The stripped-back design easily matches any fashion and any age, and eventually became a favorite among many Americans.
Today, Outdoor Products bags are popular and used in over 60 countries around the world.
The birth of Outdoor Products daypacks was greatly influenced by the circumstances of America's period of rapid economic growth. Country of Origin: Vietnam
