Noren's hand-printing technique: Made with the finest Tokuoka (100% cotton) fabric for a smooth texture. The dyeing process is performed using the Kyoto Yuzen penetration dyeing technique. To fully penetrate the dye to the backside, this process takes 1.5 times longer than standard dyeing and requires skilled technique. It also boasts colorfastness, even after the first wash. While it may feel a little stiff at first, it will gradually soften with use. Precautions for Use: Due to the nature of the dyeing process, uneven dyeing and color fading may occur. Sweat and other moisture may cause bleeding. We recommend hand washing before use. When washing, we recommend hand washing separately. Avoid using chlorine bleach as it may cause discoloration. Also, avoid using a tumble dryer.
Design: [Moon and Fireflies] As mentioned earlier, female fireflies emit light to attract males. This light is said to bring good luck and lead to the fulfillment of love. This is because, from around the Heian period, couples would use the light of fireflies to get romantically excited, declaring "we will be united." This is also mentioned in the Tale of Genji. Furthermore, the light of fireflies can only be seen at certain times and places. It is also said to mean that good fortune will befall those who see it.
Noren's original brand, "Wamon," recreates Japanese scenes residing in our hearts for modern life, developing a variety of items. Introducing tenugui cloths with Japanese scene motifs. Wamon tenugui cloths are made from the finest Tokuoka (100% cotton) fabric, which has a smooth texture. They are dyed using the Kyo-Yuzen dyeing technique. This process takes 1.5 times longer than standard dyeing methods, requiring skilled technique, to ensure the dye penetrates all the way to the back. Another feature is that the color does not fade easily, even after the first wash. While they may feel a little stiff at first, they become more comfortable with use.
Tenugui cloths can be broadly divided into two types of fabric, known as "bun" (patterned) and "oka" (patterned). Bun fabric is woven with thicker threads, numbering 20, while oka fabric is woven with thinner threads, numbering 30. Because oka fabric is made with thinner threads, the weave is finer, allowing for the expression of intricate designs such as delicate patterns and gradations. Bun fabric is made with thicker threads, so it has a coarser weave than oka fabric. However, it has good breathability and excellent water absorption, making it ideal as a handkerchief or dish towel. However, because it is coarser, it cannot match the ability to express finer designs as oka fabric, but it does have the advantage of allowing you to feel the texture of the fabric.
Tenugui were originally cloths used mainly for wiping away sweat and water, and for washing the body when bathing, and the edges are left uncut rather than folded and sewn to make them easier to dry after use and to prevent dirt from accumulating on the edges of the fabric, making them hygienic. The ends are also intentionally left unsewn so that they can be torn off and used as bandages or thongs for first aid.
Japan is blessed with four beautiful seasons: spring, summer, autumn, and winter. Since ancient times, Japanese people have incorporated the changes of the seasons into their lives and enjoyed them. However, in modern lifestyles, it is difficult to feel the seasons close to us, and incorporating a seasonal feel into our rooms can be costly and time-consuming. In such cases, by changing your tenugui towels with each season, you can easily enjoy the changing of the seasons without leaving your own home.
