This is the second installment in the New Godzilla series, following the 1984 revival of Godzilla. This film sees a younger cast, with producer Tomoyuki Tanaka handing over the reins to director and screenwriter Kazuki Omori, and Koichi Kawakita, who made his film debut as special effects director on Samurai of the Sky (1976), working on his first Godzilla film. This Toho special effects film also features many ambitious experiments, such as basing its story on a public submission. A fierce battle unfolds over Godzilla cells in Shinjuku Subcenter, a city that has been left in ruins by Godzilla.
Biollante, the super monster born from Godzilla cells, has a huge body and whip-like tentacles, giving it a very different appearance from the monsters in Toho's previous special effects films. Unfortunately, these characteristics were not fully utilized in the fight with Godzilla. Reflecting on this, Toho decided to revive the classic monster King Ghidorah in their next film and make it Godzilla's opponent. (Saito Morihiko)
