Itajime dyeing, known as kyoketsu in textiles, is a dyeing method dating back to the Nara period and adapted to washi paper. The process involves folding the washi paper multiple times, large or small, to the desired shape, sandwiching it between boards and tying it with string. Only the portions that protrude beyond the boards are immersed in the dye solution. Depending on how it's folded, various patterns emerge, and shading can also be achieved. The pressure of the boards tightened with string acts as a dye-resistant barrier, allowing the dye to bleed irregularly into the washi paper, creating a shading effect.
