Tango no Sekku, a familiar festival celebrated as Children's Day, is said to have originated in the Kamakura period. It became a festival for boys as it is today, as iris, believed to be a medicinal herb that wards off evil spirits, is associated with the martial arts, and thus became a festival for boys. May dolls are imbued with wishes for boys' strong, healthy growth and the prosperity of the family, but Yakushi Kiln's May dolls, featuring Momotaro and Kintaro, can also be enjoyed as seasonal decorations.
