Handmade Steel Helmet with Sparrow's Beak Visor, Gothic Medieval Helmet, 16th Century Knight Armor, Reenactment Gear
Revised and Improved Description: Close Helmet Knight Helmet with Sparrow's Beak Visor, 16th Century
One of the most recognizable and popular helmets of the 16th century was the Close Helmet, which was distinguished by its smooth, rounded shape and full-face protection. Our replica is based on an original from around 1485 and is inspired by history.
The close helmet, which was developed from the sallet and bevor, has a bevor that fits the chin and a more rounded skullcap that fits the curve of the head.
With its "sparrow's beak" visor, this specific model has a snarly, intimidating profile that is appropriate for heavy infantry and knights.
An genuine item from St. Peter's Church in Stourton, Wiltshire, which is currently on loan to the Royal Armouries, served as the model for this helmet. Although it is occasionally called a "transitional sallet," museum experts prefer to call it a Close Helmet.
-Features: pointy crown and rounded skullcap
Right-side Sparrow's beak-style visor with breathing holes
A single pivot mechanism that joins the visor, before the locking button, and before the visor hook
Optional finish: oil oxide treatment for a black graphite "raw" appearance; not available for stainless steel variants.
Durable mild steel, handcrafted (1.024 mm; upgrade possible

Our Close Helmet isn't a cheap costume piece. It's a functional work of art, built to impress and protect.
Authentic Sparrow'Beak Visor Design: The defining feature! The sleek, forward-pointing visor offers superior deflection of blows and a fearsome, iconic silhouette that dominated 16th-century European battlefields.
Premium Steel Construction: Forged from durable 16-gauge mild steel, this helmet provides serious impact resistance for combat while maintaining a manageable weight. It's built to last for generations.
Full Articulation Functionality: The visor and bevor (chin guard) open and close smoothly on sturdy pins, just like the originals. This allows for excellent ventilation when needed and full-face protection in the "closed" position.
Superior Protection Safety: Features a grilled lower visor for maximum breathability and forward visibility. The one-piece skull plate eliminates weak points, and the fluted design adds structural strength to absorb and dissipate impact energy.
Historical Accuracy: From the graceful lines to the functional articulation, this helmet is a faithful reproduction of German and Italian designs from the peak of Renaissance armor-making.
Wearable Comfort: Fully lined with a adjustable leather suspension system and padded interior. This ensures a secure, comfortable fit, prevents the metal from contacting your head, and allows for wearing over a padded arming cap.
Ready for Customization: The solid steel construction is perfect for bluing, painting, etching, or adding your own heraldic crests to make it uniquely yours.
Detailed Product Description
Overall Design: This is a fully functional close helmet, meaning it encloses the entire head for maximum protection. The design is inspired by the Maximilian style armor, known for its fluting and rounded shapes.
The Visor: The "Sparrow's Beak" or "Frog-Mouthed" visor is the heart of this helmet. In the closed position, it slopes forward to deflect downward blows like lances and swords away from the vision slit. The vision slit itself is wide enough for good peripheral vision in combat.
The Skull: The top of the helmet is a single, reinforced piece of steel, expertly shaped and fluted. The fluting isn't just decorative; it significantly strengthens the metal without adding excessive weight.
The Buffe (Bevor) Gorget: The lower half of the face and throat are protected by the articulated buffe, which integrates with the gorget plates to protect the neck. This entire assembly pivots up and down smoothly.
Interior Lining: The helmet comes with a pre-installed leather liner with adjustable straps. High-density foam padding is strategically placed to cushion impacts and provide a snug, custom fit.
A Touch of History: The Close Helmet
The Close Helmet evolved in the late 15th century and became the pinnacle of head protection for knights and men-at-arms throughout the 16th century. It represented the zenith of the armorer's art, offering unparalleled safety without sacrificing too much mobility or vision. The "Sparrow's Beak" variant was particularly popular among Gothic and Maximilian style armors, often worn by gendarmes and heavy cavalry. Owning this helmet is owning a piece of that legendary history
