Many of the miners who once worked here wore "capped toe" boots with a layer of leather added to the toes to protect the toes, hence the name Iron Ranger boots. This "capped toe" design was widely used in work boots in the early 20th century, and if you look at Red Wing's catalog (from 1910) shortly after its founding, 33 of the 37 types of work boots listed had a capped toe design.
