The Giant Sequoia (Sequoiadendron giganteum [Lindley, Buchholz, 1939]), also called wellingtonia (in English Giant Sequoia or Sierra Redwood), It is a plant belonging to the Cupressaceae family (previously classified in Taxodiaceae).
It is spread spontaneously only in restricted areas of the Sierra Nevada, in California.. Sequoia National Park, located about 300 km southeast of San Francisco, contains most of the specimens of this species.
Dimensions and features
Giant sequoias are the largest trees in the world in terms of volume.: more massive than the California redwoods (Sequoia sempervirens), but less high. However, only seven specimens of Sequoiadendron giganteum exceed the 1200 m³ of the Lost Monarch, a gigantic specimen of Sequoia sempervirens.
The giant sequoia can reach 95 m in height and have a basal diameter much wider than the upper part at the collar, of almost 9 m.. There is no certain information on the longevity of these trees, but dendrochronological analyses allow us to set a lower limit of approximately 2,200 years for the maximum age reached.
The shape is conical and symmetrical, with branches that descend downwards.. The bark is dark red in colour. It has needle-like leaves (lesiniform, almost squamiform), dark green in colour, 5-6 mm long, which cover the entire branch; the microsporophylls, yellow-brown in colour, are gathered in axillary and terminal catkins, the macrosporophylls are green, in apical catkins.
The oval cones measuring 6-8 cm by 4-5 cm in diameter are made up of peltate scales, a term originating from the name of the ancient Greek shield. (in ancient greek: what?, peltē), with rhomboid shield. They mature in two years.
