Raspberries, blueberries, wild strawberries, currants, gooseberries, blackberries, mulberries… are now an integral part of many Italian vegetable gardens. We have been finding highly productive seedlings on the market for some time now, which allow us to grow them even in our home garden.. We find berries in fruit salads, jams, tarts and desserts.
berries
, some useful tips Berries are suitable for growing both in the garden and in the home orchard. All types tolerate frost well but are also quite sensitive to drought and heat so it is necessary for them to live in fresh soil, with the possibility of regular irrigation.. Furthermore, berries are plants that are not very susceptible to parasite attacks, and are therefore suitable for organic and natural cultivation methods, without the use of chemical agents.
How to grow berries
berries
They should be planted in a slightly sunny or partially shaded place, sheltered from cold winds, making sure that the soil is covered with a layer of mulch.. In this regard they are well suited: leaves, low plants or bark chips. The seedlings should be placed on the edges because their size is consistent with the vegetables and they are excellent as border hedges.. Don't forget that the plant of these fruits can last even 10 years or more!
When planting, choose the most suitable place for their growth, then prepare the soil, adding leaves and peat if the soil is too heavy, adding compost, but above all lots of manure, if the soil is too light.. In particular for blueberries, but also for raspberries and currants, it is necessary to acidify all the soil that will be explored by the roots.. For this reason, it will be useful to bury needles and bark, shavings, dry matter and leaves together with the manure, to bring the pH value of the soil to around 4.5 – 5.5.
Most of the such as strawberries, blackberries and blueberries are divided into three different reproductive species: early, semi-early or late. It is also important to know that since berries have rooting stolons, the multiplication method is very simple.. In fact, to obtain new seeds it is sufficient to keep the stolons in a nursery during the winter months and when they sprout and reach five or six centimetres, they can be connected directly to the ground.
berries These seeds require a period of vernalization, and you can opt to store them in the fridge for a few months, or expose them to the winter cold outside (Sowing) at a temperature of about 3/4°. The sowing period for grapes is autumn and winter, you can start sowing from September (but nobody forbids it even before) until January. The seeds should be placed on the surface of the soil (I use a mix of garden soil, good potting soil, leaf mould and aggregates to ensure good drainage.) and they can be covered with a layer of the same soil, furthermore at the end you can make a layer of gravel which helps during watering to not move the soil, after which you can water.
