N-acetyl-cysteine (NAC) is a stable form of the non-essential amino acid L-cysteine. It is a sulfur-containing amino acid that acts as a stabilizer in the formation of protein structures, which contributes to the formation of glutathione. Glutathione is a component responsible for the elimination of free radicals, which also contributes to the normal and balanced work of the immune system. In addition, NAC may promote the health of the brain and neural tissue.
Functional action:
N-acetylcysteine participates in the synthesis of glutathione - one of the body's most powerful antioxidants, which neutralizes many toxic effects. But given the fact that glutathione is poorly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, to restore its normal level in case of pathology, NAC is prescribed.
In addition to participating in the synthesis of glutathione, NAK has a direct antioxidant effect, which is due to the presence of SH-groups in its formula. It neutralizes reactive oxygen species (ROS), preventing the development of oxidative stress that damages the cell.
Considering the above, NAC is an oncoprotector.
N-Acetylcysteine has a detoxifying effect. It neutralizes harmful effects caused by exposure to heavy metals (lead, cadmium, arsenic), chemicals, etc. Reduces the toxic effect of mercury (for example, mercury amalgam in dentistry).
It has a mucolytic and expectorant effect, thins sputum, reduces its viscosity and facilitates separation. This effect is manifested at the level of epithelial cells of the mucous membrane of the bronchi and ENT organs.
It has some anti-inflammatory effect (by suppressing the formation of free radicals and active oxygen-containing substances responsible for the development of inflammation).
NAC has a radioprotective effect, protecting against radiation and X-rays.
Reduces the amount of low-density lipoproteins, providing protection against atherosclerosis.
L-cysteine is part of the main protein of nails, skin and hair. It promotes the formation of collagen and improves the elasticity and texture of the skin, protects against aging.
