The word Piercing comes from the English "to pierce". The navel piercing (also referred to as a belly button piercing) is a piercing made on the edge of the navel. The navel piercing is nowadays mostly worn by women. Lip piercings can be placed anywhere around the mouth. Piercings in specific positions have certain names. Monroe piercings, for example, are piercings worn on the upper lip where Marilyn Monroe had her famous beauty mark. Medusa piercings go through the center of the upper lip (the philtrum), perpendicular to the tissue. Labret piercings can be pierced in the center or on the side of the lip (offset labret piercing). The variation is called the vertical lowbret, which starts inside the mouth between the lower lip and the teeth and travels straight down out of the lower edge of the jaw. Horizontal piercings are rare and include a horizontal bar on the lower lip that crosses the surface of the lip. An arch piercing is a visible perforation in the face that pierces the skin at the level of the brow bone. The arch piercing is generally a barbell, a micro-banana, and/or a ring with a diameter of 1.2 mm placed vertically over the eyebrow.
