[Material: Soda Glass][Size: Height: Approx. 9cm, Diameter: Approx. 8.8cm][Capacity: Approx. 270ml][Production Method: Ryukyu Glass Blown Glass][Made in China (Food Inspection Passed in Japan)]
The origins of Ryukyu glass: It is believed that Ryukyu glass began to be made around the middle of the Meiji period. Among Okinawa's many traditional crafts, it is still a relatively new craft with a short history. It began to be mass-produced shortly after the war, when it began to be made for American soldiers stationed there. The colorful Ryukyu glass that continues to this day is said to have begun when empty soft drink bottles discarded by American soldiers who occupied Okinawa were recycled and used as a resource.
The Development of Ryukyu Glass: Ryukyu glass developed significantly due to the historical background of the continued presence of the U.S. military after the war. At that time, Ryukyu glass was primarily made from recycled glass. It was thick, had air bubbles in it, and its colors were not the vibrant primary colors seen today, but rather a dull, transparent color. However, it lacked the transparency, coldness, and delicacy characteristic of glass found in other glassware. Rather, its deep colors and unique air bubbles were appreciated as a distinctively Okinawan charm, and have continued to this day. Air bubbles, which would normally be considered defective, have been incorporated as a characteristic of Ryukyu glass, enhancing its depth and depth. Even today, with an increasing number of workshops using raw glass, the simple flavor and art of light are passed down.
The spirit of the Ryukyu glass artisan... There are two methods for making Ryukyu glass: "free blowing," in which the glass is wound around the end of a blowpipe and shaped by blowing air into it, and "mold blowing," in which the glass is blown directly into a mold. The glassblowing process must be completed before the glass cools completely. The glass, heated by flames reaching up to 1,400 degrees, melts into a viscous liquid and moves constantly like a living thing. This is a process that requires constant vigilance, even for a moment.
The heat is unimaginable. However, by tuning into the movements of the glass, which seems to have a will of its own, and facing the inherent characteristics of glass, the colors and brilliance of Ryukyu glass are born, surpassing the will and technique of the maker.
